Against Political Influence

TN and Karnataka Unite Against Political Influence: At the India Today Conclave South 2025, the spotlight turned toward a powerful conversation on the future of education. Tamil Nadu’s School Education Minister, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, and Karnataka’s Education Minister, Madhu Bangarappa, spoke with one voice in rejecting any attempt to “saffronise” the education system. Their message was clear and emotional  children must remain at the heart of education, not political ideologies.

Both leaders stressed that classrooms should nurture curiosity, knowledge, and inclusivity rather than force fed ideology. Bangarappa recalled his very first act as minister removing saffronised content from school textbooks in line with a promise made to the people. Echoing this, Poyyamozhi reminded the audience that the foundation of education must rest firmly on the values of the Constitution: secularism, equity, and federalism.

Language Should Be a Choice, Not a Burden

Against Political Influence

Language was another area where both states drew a firm line. While welcoming multilingualism, the ministers rejected the compulsion of Hindi. Poyyamozhi argued that students excelling in science, math, or other core subjects should not be penalised for a third language. Bangarappa pointed to Karnataka’s introduction of 5,000 bilingual schools, respecting parental choice as upheld by the Supreme Court.

Their stance was rooted in respect for India’s diversity a belief that no child’s dreams should be clipped by rigid language policies.

A Shift Towards Skill and Practical Learning

Both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are now investing heavily in skill based learning, preparing children not just for exams but for life. Karnataka’s new “Skill at School” initiative introduces practical training from Class 6, aiming to grow into an “earn while you learn” model in partnership with ITIs and technical colleges.

Bangarappa summed it up poignantly: “Education alone is no longer sufficient; the future is skill.” Tamil Nadu, too, has consistently led with inclusive welfare measures like the pioneering midday meal and the new CM Breakfast Scheme, ensuring children not only learn but stay in school.

The Battle Over Equity and Funding

The ministers also addressed funding, a long debated issue between states and the Centre. Tamil Nadu’s Poyyamozhi highlighted that his state alone spends nearly Rs46,767 crore on school education surpassing the Centre’s national allocation. Bangarappa added that states like Karnataka, which contribute significantly in GST, must receive their fair share to strengthen their education systems.

Opposition to NEET and the Fight for Fair Access

Another unifying theme was their opposition to NEET, which both ministers described as an exam of “coaching affordability” rather than aptitude. Poyyamozhi reminded the audience that Tamil Nadu had been producing exceptional doctors for decades without NEET, proving that the true test of quality lies in healthcare outcomes, not exam rankings.

Both leaders pledged to continue fighting for equitable access to education across India, extending their concerns beyond their states. As Poyyamozhi beautifully concluded, “We are not thinking about Tamil or Karnataka children. Bihar, UP, Rajasthan, each child is our own child.”

Keeping Children at the Core

Against Political Influence

The debate ended with a rare moment of unity in Indian politics: a shared vision that children must remain the centre of all education reforms. Away from ideology, away from political battles, and firmly anchored in equity and opportunity, the ministers made a promise to safeguard the future of young learners.
