Sameer Wankhede vs Netflix: The name Sameer Wankhede once made national headlines during the 2021 cruise ship drug case involving actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son, Aryan Khan. Now, the IRS officer is back in the spotlight, but this time for a different reason. Wankhede has approached the Delhi High Court, filing a defamation suit against Netflix and Red Chillies Entertainment over their upcoming series The Ba**ds of Bollywood*.
Allegations of Defamation and Malicious Portrayal

According to Wankhede, the series directed by Aryan Khan and produced by Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment unfairly maligns his image and portrays anti drug enforcement agencies in a negative light. In his petition, he has sought Rs2 crore in damages, which he has pledged to donate to the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital.
In a statement released on Thursday, Wankhede emphasized that the show “disseminates a misleading and negative portrayal of anti drug enforcement agencies, thereby eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions.” He further argued that the series was “deliberately conceptualised and executed” to harm his reputation in a “colourable and prejudicial manner.”
Objectionable Depictions and Legal Concerns

The officer has also raised serious objections to certain depictions in the series. One particularly controversial scene allegedly shows a character making an obscene gesture raising a middle finger after reciting “Satyamev Jayate,” the national motto inscribed on India’s emblem. Wankhede contends that such content amounts to a violation of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which could attract penal consequences.
Additionally, he has claimed that the series contravenes provisions under the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, arguing that the offensive material could “outrage national sentiment.”
From the 2021 Drug Case to Courtroom Drama
The controversy brings back memories of the high profile drug raid in 2021, when Aryan Khan was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau under Wankhede’s leadership. The case dominated news cycles for weeks before Aryan Khan was eventually cleared of all charges in 2022, with the NCB confirming that “no drugs had been found on him.”
Now, as the legal battle unfolds, questions loom large is this a fight for reputation, or will it open yet another chapter of intense scrutiny around Bollywood, law enforcement, and public perception?
