The current deadline to file ITRs without penalty is September 15, 2025, and so far, no extension has been announced. While taxpayers had some relief earlier this year when the government extended the deadline from July 31 to September 15, officials have now clarified that the clock is ticking with no fresh extension in sight.

The official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Income Tax Department shared the milestone achievement of crossing six crore filings. The department also reassured taxpayers that help is available round the clock. Support is being provided via calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and social media assistance, ensuring that even last-minute filers are not left stranded.
The department’s message carried both gratitude and urgency:
“Thank you taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us reach the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) as of now and still counting. We urge all those who haven’t filed ITR for AY 2025-26 to file at the earliest to avoid last-minute rush. Let’s continue this momentum!”
A Look Back at Recent Trends
The trend of rising tax compliance is clearly visible. For Assessment Year 2024-25, India saw a record breaking 7.28 crore ITRs filed by July 31, 2024, up from 6.77 crore in AY 2023-24. This year, despite the late changes in the ITR forms that led to the deadline extension, taxpayers are once again showing up in strong numbers.
The filings for AY 2025-26 cover the income earned during Financial Year 2024-25. The earlier extension was granted due to structural and content revisions in the ITR forms, but with that adjustment made, taxpayers are being urged not to wait until the very last minute.
