DUSU Elections 2025: Delhi University’s North Campus, usually alive with the chatter of students, roadside cafes, and the energy of academic life, now wears the look of a highly guarded zone. With the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections set for September 18, the vibe of festivity and political campaigning has been overshadowed by barricades, heavy deployment of security forces, and strict checks.
Security Like Never Before

For the first time in recent memory, more than 175 security personnel, including Delhi Police and paramilitary forces, have been stationed at critical points across the campus. Roads are barricaded, patrolling has intensified, and checkpoints have turned DU’s North Campus into what students describe as a “political fortress.” The kind of tight vigilance usually seen during large-scale political rallies is now being mirrored in a student election.
Students React to the Tense Atmosphere
Many students feel the mood this year is vastly different. Raj, a final-year student from Kirori Mal College, shared his frustration after spending 45 minutes just to enter the Faculty of Law to file his nomination. “In the past, I’ve campaigned for leaders, but this year it feels like I’m entering a battlefield, not a campus,” he said.
Echoing the sentiment, Diya Mishra of Ramjas College added, “This hardly feels like a student election. With so many officers everywhere, it’s more like a state-level political showdown.”
Why Such Heavy Vigilance?
Authorities say the security is not excessive but necessary. Devendra Singh Oberoi, SHO of Maurice Nagar, explained that the High Court has issued strict guidelines this year to prevent defacement, property damage, and misconduct during the elections. Around 60 police personnel from Maurice Nagar Police Station — 40% of them women officers — are on duty, alongside 105 paramilitary personnel posted at the Proctor’s Office, DUSU office, Vice Chancellor’s office, and the Arts Faculty. Oberoi assured that arrests or fines will be carried out only after due legal procedures.
A Different Kind of Student Election

This year’s DUSU elections stand apart for their extraordinary security measures and controlled atmosphere. What has traditionally been a festival of slogans, rallies, and youthful energy is now being conducted under watchful eyes and strict enforcement of rules. While some students find this unsettling, others believe it could prevent the violence and chaos that have marred previous polls.
The Road to September 18
As nomination and campaigning continue under tight surveillance, North Campus reflects both the seriousness of political engagement and the spirit of student democracy. For Delhi University, the upcoming polls are not just about electing new student leaders, but also about setting an example of how student politics can coexist with discipline, safety, and accountability.
