From Dead Economy to Fastest Growing: In a powerful political showdown, India’s impressive GDP growth numbers for the first quarter of 2025 have sparked a heated exchange between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. While Gandhi had recently described the Indian economy as “dead,” fresh data has painted a very different picture one of resilience, growth, and optimism.
According to official figures, the Indian economy grew by 7.8% in Q1, the highest growth rate in the last five quarters. This performance comes despite global challenges, including the impact of U.S. tariffs, and has been largely powered by the agricultural sector and the relentless drive of India’s workforce.
BJP Celebrates Growth, Hits Back at Gandhi

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called the new GDP numbers a “hardest slap of reality” for Rahul Gandhi. In a statement filled with pride, he said, “Those who called it a ‘dead economy’ must now realise that India is a ‘long live economy,’ driven by the sweat of farmers, the innovation of scientists, and the resilience of 140 crore Indians.”
Union Minister Piyush Goyal too lauded the figures, terming them a “resounding response” to critics and pessimists. He stressed that India is on track to remain the world’s fastest growing economy well into the future. “Our exports will continue to grow, we will do higher exports this year than last year and the future is extremely bright,” Goyal said while addressing an event in Mumbai.
Social Media Sparks With Political Fire
The debate quickly spilled over to social media, where BJP leaders wasted no time in targeting Gandhi. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP’s IT cell, tweeted: “For the acerbic, delusional, frustrated Rahul Gandhi, the latest GDP numbers are the hardest slap of reality.” He further highlighted that India’s growth proves its resilience and global standing as one of the strongest economies today.
Rahul Gandhi’s Recent Remarks
Rahul Gandhi has recently echoed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticisms, where Trump had called India’s economy “dead” amid trade disputes. Gandhi had accused the BJP led government of damaging India’s economic, defence, and foreign policies. However, the latest economic data has given the ruling party a strong narrative to counter those claims.

The Bigger Picture
With 7.8% growth, India has once again positioned itself as a global economic powerhouse. While political battles continue, the numbers reflect a broader story that of farmers, workers, innovators, and entrepreneurs who are powering India’s economic engine forward. The government views this as proof of its policies working, while critics argue that challenges remain on the ground.
What remains certain is that India’s growth journey is being closely watched not just domestically, but globally.
