Arshdeep Singh Silent Battle: When you’re young, full of energy, and passionate about your game, sitting on the sidelines can sometimes feel tougher than facing the fiercest opponent. That’s exactly what India’s left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh went through during India’s recent tour of England. Despite being a part of the squad for the much talked about Anderson Tendulkar Trophy, the 26 year old never got the chance to make his long-awaited Test debut.
The Waiting Game in England

Arshdeep traveled with the team for the entire five match Test series but warmed the bench throughout. With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj being automatic starters, and Prasidh Krishna getting the nod over him, the young bowler had little to do except wait and hope. Just when fans thought Manchester could bring him his dream opportunity, an untimely injury ruled him out of the final game.
This long wait wasn’t easy. Punjab bowling coach Gagandeep Singh recently revealed that Arshdeep grew impatient during this period. “He was getting impatient because he was not getting a chance. I told him, ‘You have to wait for your time’,” Gagandeep said. His words showed how much the bench time had tested Arshdeep’s mental strength.
Why Wasn’t He Picked?
The big question that lingers in everyone’s mind is: why wasn’t Arshdeep given a chance in England? According to Gagandeep, it might have been because the team management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill, wasn’t fully confident about his red-ball capabilities. It’s a tough call because Arshdeep, with his natural ability to swing the ball and his tall frame, could have been a real asset in English conditions.
Arshdeep has proven himself in the domestic circuit, having played 21 first class games and taking 66 wickets at an average of 30.37, including two five-wicket hauls. Yet, the wait for that first Test cap continues.
A Star in White Ball Cricket
While the Test dream is still on hold, Arshdeep has made a huge mark in white ball cricket. In fact, he is now India’s highest wicket-taker in T20 Internationals, with 99 wickets at an outstanding average of 18.30. His best figures, 4/9, showcase his ability to deliver under pressure. His variations, calmness in the death overs, and knack for striking at crucial moments have made him a household name among Indian fans.
Looking Ahead Asia Cup 2025
The good news for Arshdeep and his fans is that he has been named in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, set to begin on September 9 in the UAE. Alongside Bumrah and Harshit Rana, he will be one of the frontline pacers leading India’s bowling attack. With the white ball in his hand, Arshdeep has the chance to remind everyone why he is among the most promising fast bowlers of this generation.
The Road to Test Cricket
Every young cricketer dreams of wearing the whites and making a mark in Test cricket. For Arshdeep, that moment hasn’t come yet. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that patience often leads to greatness. Many legends before him had to wait before finding their place in the longest format, and Arshdeep’s journey is still very much alive. With his skills and determination, his Test cap might just be a matter of time.
