From Defence to Developmen: In today’s fast-changing world, where oceans connect nations and security defines stability, India and Fiji have stepped forward to renew their friendship and strategic partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka met in New Delhi and announced stronger defence and development cooperation, while also pledging to uphold the vision of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

India and Fiji’s Shared Vision for the Indo Pacific

Both leaders underlined the importance of peace and prosperity in the Indo Pacific. Prime Minister Modi described Fiji as a “hub” of India’s cooperation with Pacific island nations, noting that together, the two countries support an Indo-Pacific that is free, secure, and open to all. This shared vision is also a signal against rising tensions in the region, particularly in the South China Sea.

Boosting Fiji’s Maritime and Defence Capabilities

To strengthen Fiji’s security, India announced training and advanced equipment for Fijian armed forces. The two countries will also collaborate on U.N. peacekeeping operations, military medicine, and White Shipping Information Exchange. Prime Minister Rabuka welcomed India’s support in protecting Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone and praised the upcoming visit of an Indian naval ship to Fiji as a major step towards stronger maritime cooperation.

Expanding Cooperation Beyond Defence

The talks weren’t limited to military ties. India gifted two ambulances to Fiji’s military forces and inaugurated a new defence wing at the Indian High Commission in Suva. In addition, both sides agreed to enhance cybersecurity collaboration, with India helping to set up a cybersecurity training cell in Fiji. Humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and advanced technology projects also form part of the broader cooperation roadmap.

Health, Culture and People to People Connections

A key highlight of the meeting was the signing of seven MoUs, including plans to build a super-speciality hospital in Fiji. Under India’s ‘Heal in India’ programme, up to 10 Fijians each year will receive specialised medical treatment in Indian hospitals. Prime Minister Modi also acknowledged the deep cultural bond created by Indian indentured labourers who migrated to Fiji between 1879 and 1916, adding a “new colour” to Fijian society and strengthening its diversity and unity.

A Message of Peace and Partnership

While strengthening their bilateral relationship, both India and Fiji also sent a strong message to the global community. Their call for a free, open, and inclusive Indo Pacific comes at a time of growing geopolitical competition. By deepening cooperation in defence, security, and development, the two nations are ensuring that smaller Pacific island countries are not left behind but empowered to shape their own future.
